PlaySpaceVR

A VR Unity3D Game

The main motivation behind creating PlaySpace was to further improve my skills and experience in both Unity3D and Blender. However, as most of my creative projects do, it soon took a hold of me and I just couldn't stop working on it!

The design choice of building a series of mini-games instead of one structured game was a conscious one. This allowed me to explore the most effective and enjoyable ways thus far of using VR. I took inspiration from already popular games like 'Tilt Brush' and 'The Lab', whilst also trying to ensure as much originality as possible.

The project enabled me to better understand for the issues that are important to get right in VR. For example, good optimization is essential to ensure high frame rate (>= 90fps) to prevent motion sickness). In terms of immersive locomotion, there is no flawless solution. Teleportation allows freedom of movement but reduces immersion. 1:1 movement prevents motion sickness and is the most immersive type of movement, but you are restricted to the space you are playing in. I made the design choice of choosing 1:1 movement, and designed my mini-games to be restricted to the play space available, as I felt this was the most immersive experience.
